As a writer and photographer\, her work revolves around the themes of identity and social justice. Fariha’s creative work is published in Columbus Alive\, Vox Media\, the Columbus anthology\, and various literary journals and publications.\nThis seven-session creative writing workshop will explore various styles of poetry related to themes of identity\, erasure\, and migration. The work of various American poets of color\, both past\, and present\, will be read\, discussed\, and reflected upon for elements and style. Mudcloth is a beautiful fabric made in Mali\, West Africa\, with 100% cotton strip cloth\, woven on a traditional loom\, and dyed with natural mud to make exquisite fabric. Mudcloth is celebrated for its rich traditional methods\, right at home in contemporary design. We will make a simple fabric flower with this cloth\, topped with a sweet little stamen made out of 100% wool\, hand felted into a ball\, made in Bolivia. Dr. Ted McDaniel and Dr. Mark Lomax III will discuss Black music as a continuum and reflect on spirituals and blues as they relate to the foundation of global music. In addition they will talk about music as a symbol of resistance during the late 1800s and beyond. Dr. Lomax will share selections from his collection\, 400: An Afrikan Epic that directly relate to Juneteenth. \nCo-hosted by National Afro–American Museum & Cultural Center.\nLearn more about the history and significance of Juneteeth in a blog post written by Jerolyn Barbee and Derek Pridemore of the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center. See that post here. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Ted McDaniel\, Professor of African American Music at The Ohio State University since 1981 is a specialist in jazz history\, jazz performance and African American Music; he retired in 2015.  He held faculty appointments in the School of Music and the Department of African American Studies where he served as Department Chair for eight years. His scholarly and creative writings were on aspects of jazz and black music\, and he was invited to lecture extensively throughout the United States and to present in Africa\, Europe and China. \nDr. Mark Lomax\, II holds a Doctor of Music Arts degree in composition from The Ohio State University.  He is a critically-acclaimed composer\, recording artist\, drummer\, activist and educator. He has toured extensively with jazz greats such as Clark Terry\, Delfeayo and Ellis Marsallis Dr. Lomax lectures on the socio-political and spiritual aspects of African American art\, music\, race and using the arts to build community. In 2019 he released 400:An Afrikan Epic. It consists of a 12 album cycle that tells the story of the Afrikan Diaspora.  This project was completed during a residency at The Wexner Center for the Arts. 400 has been presented across the country at various colleges\, universities\, art and community organizations. Learn more about the project and go behind the scenes with Dr. Lomax.

In honor of Black History Month\, we will hear from four brilliant Black women from right here in Columbus\, including esteemed health expert Dr. Mysheika Roberts\, Columbus Public Health Commissioner\, and the brilliant and accessible Dr. Karin Wurapa\, who specializes in preventative medicine. Moderated by Ms. Tracy Maxwell Heard\, Executive Director for MACC\, this impactful conversation will answer frequently asked questions centered around the pandemic. Have you wondered things like – what is in the vaccine? What should I expect when I get my vaccination? How do they know what dosage is right for me? What about my blood type? Can they force me to get the vaccine? Join us as we answer these questions\, address the health disparities that disproportionately affect African American communities\, discuss how we can be the best advocates for our health\, and much more! \nAbout our Panelists:\nDr. Mysheika Roberts is the Health Commissioner for Columbus Public Health. Dr. Roberts leads the organization and a team of nearly 500 public health professionals who are focused on neighborhood-based approaches that address the social determinants of health from safe\, affordable housing and education to jobs and violent crime in order to decrease the health disparities that exist. \nDr. Karin Wurapa\, is a passionate advocate for wellness. Dr. Wurapa is a Family\, Lifestyle\, and Preventive Medicine Physician who also specializes in Public Health Policy. She recently completed a special assignment as a consultant to the Medical Director and COVID Response Team at the Ohio Department of Health. \nOur moderator for the event is Ms. Tracy Maxwell Heard. Ms. Maxwell Heard is the Executive Director of Multiethnic Advocates for Cultural Competence (MACC\, Inc.). Heard earned an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for efforts in Ohio legislature.

SUMMARY:SOAR On Saturdays — African Dance (BalletMet)
DESCRIPTION:A virtual class will be held from 3 PM – 4 PM on Zoom and an in-person class will be held from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (subject to change due to COVID-19).\nFree. Ages 8-12.\nSoar on Saturdays is a dance access program that provides young students the opportunity to explore movement over the course of a free six-week dance class. Classes meet once a week. At the end of each six-week session\, parents are invited to watch their child participate in class. (To protect the privacy of the other dancers\, we ask that parents do not video record the computer screen.) Class size is very limited\, and registration will be based on a lottery system. Everyone who registers by the deadline will be entered into a lottery for that session. Students whose names are drawn will be invited to participate in the session.
