SUMMARY:Lucy Kaplansky with The Young Novelists
DESCRIPTION:A truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.\n \n\n\nLucy Kaplansky began singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. She went to New York City\, where she became involved in the city’s folk music scene and found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. After pursuing a career in clinical psychology\, in the early 1990s she was pulled back into the studio by Shawn Colvin and Nanci Griffith to sing on their albums and record her first solo album\, The Tide. In 1998 Kaplansky teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form supergroup Cry Cry Cry and record some of their favorite songs written by other artists. She has nine solo albums. Last Days of Summer\, released in June 2022\, has been called “exquisite” (Dallas Morning News) with “…honest vocals\, easy melodies\, and well-crafted lyricism” (Folk Alley).\n\n\n\nlucykaplansky.com \n\n“New York songwriter Lucy Kaplansky is becoming the troubadour laureate of modern folk.”\n\n\n–The Boston Globe\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA euphoric burst of folk rock.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOntario husband and wife duo The Young Novelists create contemporary folk songs that marry their effortless harmonies with darkly poetic lyrics and exquisitely crafted hooks. They have toured in Canada\, the United States\, and Europe. Their third album\, In City & Country\, features songs about ten small towns in Ontario and has been described as “emotional\, melodic music that variously reminds me of the Jayhawks and Richard and Linda Thompson” (No Depression). Their previous album landed them a Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist and multiple songwriting awards.\n\n\n\ntheyoungnovelists.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Like the Decemberists\, but rockier and less quirky\, like Americana but quirkier and rockier\, a talented Toronto outfit.”\n\n\n–rock nyc

SUMMARY:Poetry Night with Acclaimed Writer Saeed Jones! In Conversation with Poet and Scholar Marcus Jackson!
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning author of Prelude to Bruise and How We Fight for Our Lives\, Saeed Jones as he shares his latest book\, Alive at the End of the World. Pierced by grief and charged with history\, this new poetry collection confronts our everyday apocalypses. Jones will be in conversation with fellow poet Marcus Jackson. \nRegistration for this free program is on Eventbrite. \nKING ARTS COMPLEX\, OHIO POETRY ASSOCIATION\, and OHIO STATE’S CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM are Gramercy’s Community Partners for this poetry program.  \nIn haunted poems glinting with laughter\, Jones explores the public and private betrayals of life as we know it. With verve\, wit\, and elegant craft\, he strips away American artifice in order to reveal the intimate grief of a mourning son and the collective grief bearing down on all of us. \nDrawing from memoir\, fiction\, and persona\, Jones confronts the everyday perils of white supremacy with a finely tuned poetic ear\, identifying moments that seem routine even as they open chasms of hurt. Viewing himself as an unreliable narrator\, Jones looks outward to understand what’s within\, bringing forth cultural icons like Little Richard\, Paul Mooney\, Aretha Franklin and Diahann Carroll to illuminate how long and how perilously we’ve been living on top of fault lines. As these poems seek ways to love and survive through America’s existential threats\, Jones ushers his readers toward the realization that the end of the world is already here–and the apocalypse is a state of being. \nSaeed Jones was born in Memphis\, Tennessee\, and grew up in Lewisville\, Texas. His work has appeared in the New Yorker\, New York Times\, and GQ\, and he has been featured on public radio programs including NPR’s Fresh Air\, Pop Culture Happy Hour\, It’s Been A Minute with Sam Sanders\, and All Things Considered. SUMMARY:An Evening with Bestselling Author Ross Gay in Conversation with Acclaimed Writer and Cultural Critic Hanif Abudurraqib!
DESCRIPTION:Join Ross Gay\, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Delights\, as he shares his new intimate and electrifying collection of essays\, Inciting Joy in conversation with nationally acclaimed poet\, essayist\, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib. In these gorgeously written and timely pieces\, Gay considers the joy we incite when we care for each other\, especially during life’s inevitable hardships. Throughout Inciting Joy\, he explores how we can practice recognizing that connection\, and also\, crucially\, how we expand it. \nRegistration is on Eventbrite. The $5 admission fee is waived with the purchase of Inciting Joy.   \nKING ARTS COMPLEX and OHIO POETRY ASSOCIATION are Gramercy’s Community Partners for this program. \nIn “We Kin” he thinks about the garden (especially around August\, when the zucchini and tomatoes come on) as a laboratory of mutual aid; in “Share Your Bucket” he explores skate boarding’s reclamation of public space; he considers the costs of masculinity in “Grief Suite”; and in “Through My Tears I Saw\,” he recognizes what was healed in caring for his father as he was dying. \nIn an era when divisive voices take up so much air space\, Inciting Joy offers a vital alternative: What might be possible if we turn our attention to what brings us together\, to what we love? Full of energy\, curiosity\, and compassion\, Inciting Joy is essential reading from one of our most brilliant writers. \nRoss Gay is the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Delights: Essays and four books of poetry. His Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude won the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award\, and was a finalist for the National Book Award; and Be Holding won the 2021 PEN America Jean Stein Book Award. He is a founding board member of the Bloomington Community Orchard\, a non-profit\, free-fruit-for-all food justice and joy project. Gay has received fellowships from Cave Canem\, the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference\, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He teaches at Indiana University. \nHanif Abdurraqib is a nationally acclaimed poet\, essayist\, and cultural critic from Columbus\, Ohio. His most recent book of essays\, A Little Devil in America: Notes in Praise of Black Performance\, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Nonfiction and named one of the ten best books of the year by Publishers Weekly. He is the author of two poetry collections\, The Crown Ain’t Worth Much\, a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award and nominated for a Hurston-Wright Legacy Award\, and A Fortune for Your Disaster\, winner of the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. His first collection of essays\, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us\, was named a book of the year by NPR\, Esquire\, BuzzFeed\, O: The Oprah Magazine\, Pitchfork\, and Chicago Tribune\, among others. Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to a Tribe Called Quest was a New York Times bestseller and a National Book Critics Circle Award and Kirkus Prize finalist and was longlisted for the National Book Award. In 2021\, he was named a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellow. \nPURCHASE TICKETS\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInciting Joy: Essays (Hardcover)\n\nBy Ross Gay\n$27.00
