DESCRIPTION:The King Arts Complex After School Program is a FREE session that targets elementary and middle school students between the 1st and 8th grade (ages 6-13). This program\, thanks to our community of public and private support\, is provided at no cost to you. The After School Program will follow the schedule of Columbus City Schools’ calendar. \nStudents in grades 4-8 have the opportunity to participate in arts and tech programs including animation\, digital coding and visual arts. There will also be a homework/study hour with a tutor\, and a light snack provided. DESCRIPTION:KBK Foundation is a 501(c) organization founded in 2010 with a mission to support Economic Development\,\nCommunity Development\, Social Services\, and the Arts in the communities that we serve. KBK Foundation is\ncommitted to “bridging today’s realities with tomorrow’s possibilities.” As it relates to Black Art\, we believe\nit tells our authentic narrative. Supporting Black Art and Black Artists will help to produce positive images of\nthe Black community thus leading to the resistance of race-based negativity and biases. \nKBK Foundation has initiated the Culture: Black Fine Art Expo to showcase the importance of Black Fine Art\nas an investment and as an expression of Black culture. KBK Foundation has selected several reputable\ngalleries and purveyors of Black Fine Art from around the country to participate in our second Black Fine Art\nevent and the first annual Culture: Black Fine Art Expo. Also\, several African American artists will be\ninvolved to showcase their latest artwork. There will be multiple lectures at this event to educate the\ncommunity about Black Fine Art including collecting art\, portfolio development\, appraisals\, and other\naspects of this segment of visual art. \nThe Ohio State University is the Strategic Partner for this event. The Ohio State University has a long history\nsupporting Black Fine Art: The Frank W. Hale\, Jr. Black Cultural Center has one of the largest collections of\nBlack Fine Art in the country. Samella Lewis\, the first Black PhD in Fine Art in the country\, earned her PhD at\nThe Ohio State University. The Ohio State Strategic Partners involved are committed to furthering the\nexposure of Black Fine Art throughout Ohio’s 88 counties\, surrounding communities\, and beyond through\nthe Culture: Black Fine Art Expo. The Culture: Black Fine Art Expo is KBK Foundation’s Signature Event. DESCRIPTION:Roy Ayers has been on a world tour and is back in Columbus at The King Arts Complex for the first time since 2012!  Mr. Ayers is an American funk\, soul\, and jazz composer\, vibraphone player\, and music producer. He began his career as a post-bop jazz artist\, releasing several albums with Atlantic Records\, before his tenure at Polydor Records beginning in the 1970s\, during which he helped pioneer jazz-funk. He is a key figure in the acid jazz movement and has been dubbed “The Godfather of Neo Soul”. DESCRIPTION:A truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs.\n \n\n\nLucy Kaplansky began singing in Chicago folk music clubs as a teenager. She went to New York City\, where she became involved in the city’s folk music scene and found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. After pursuing a career in clinical psychology\, in the early 1990s she was pulled back into the studio by Shawn Colvin and Nanci Griffith to sing on their albums and record her first solo album\, The Tide. In 1998 Kaplansky teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form supergroup Cry Cry Cry and record some of their favorite songs written by other artists. She has nine solo albums. Pierced by grief and charged with history\, this new poetry collection confronts our everyday apocalypses. Jones will be in conversation with fellow poet Marcus Jackson. \nRegistration for this free program is on Eventbrite. \nKING ARTS COMPLEX\, OHIO POETRY ASSOCIATION\, and OHIO STATE’S CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM are Gramercy’s Community Partners for this poetry program.  \nIn haunted poems glinting with laughter\, Jones explores the public and private betrayals of life as we know it. With verve\, wit\, and elegant craft\, he strips away American artifice in order to reveal the intimate grief of a mourning son and the collective grief bearing down on all of us. \nDrawing from memoir\, fiction\, and persona\, Jones confronts the everyday perils of white supremacy with a finely tuned poetic ear\, identifying moments that seem routine even as they open chasms of hurt. Viewing himself as an unreliable narrator\, Jones looks outward to understand what’s within\, bringing forth cultural icons like Little Richard\, Paul Mooney\, Aretha Franklin and Diahann Carroll to illuminate how long and how perilously we’ve been living on top of fault lines.
