DESCRIPTION:Wexner Arts’ address: 1871 North High Street Columbus\, Ohio 43210 \nFor Love Rollercoaster\, visual artist Tomashi Jackson has created five new paintings centered around themes of voter disenfranchisement and suppression in Ohio’s Black communities. \n\n\n\nThe paintings examine the state’s troubling history with these issues and its particular challenges in the present political moment. Photographs\, local and national campaign ephemera\, details from conversations with Ohio citizens\, and planes of bright color are the foundational materials Jackson uses in creating these compelling works. \n\nADMISSION\nFree for members\, college students (with valid ID)\, patrons under 18\, active military and veterans\n$9 general public\n$7 senior citizens (65 and older)\, Ohio State faculty and staff (with BuckID) \nAll visitors are admitted to the exhibition for free on Thursdays after 4 PM and on the first Sunday of each month. The exhibition is closed on Mondays. \nPlease note: due to university guidelines on the COVID-19 pandemic\, timed ticketing will be used to restrict capacity in our galleries and face coverings will be required in all areas of the center. We strongly recommend you purchase tickets online in advance of your visit and limit the items you bring with you. The Young Filmmakers Project is a hands-on course where students learn the nuts and bolts of film production at one of Columbus’s iconic arts institutions. In the process\, our young filmmakers will write\, direct and produce a short film.\n\nAll teens 13-18 years old who are interested in making movies are welcome — NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Learn professional script writing\, directing\, filming\, and editing! Collaborate with fellow aspiring filmmakers to write a screenplay\, direct actors\, film\, light and record audio on your very own film. The King Arts Complex has partnered with local Independent Filmmaker\, Siriah Miller\, to produce a professional short film. Participants of the Young Filmmakers Project will have a budget and access to professional film equipment. By the end of the program\, every aspiring artist will be have the official title of Filmmaker and a project of their very own to add to their reel.

DESCRIPTION:A virtual class will be held from 3 PM – 4 PM on Zoom and an in-person class will be held from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (subject to change due to COVID-19).\nFree. Ages 8-12.\nSoar on Saturdays is a dance access program that provides young students the opportunity to explore movement over the course of a free six-week dance class. Classes meet once a week. At the end of each six-week session\, parents are invited to watch their child participate in class. (To protect the privacy of the other dancers\, we ask that parents do not video record the computer screen.) Class size is very limited\, and registration will be based on a lottery system. Everyone who registers by the deadline will be entered into a lottery for that session. Students whose names are drawn will be invited to participate in the session. Dr. Roberts leads the organization and a team of nearly 500 public health professionals who are focused on neighborhood-based approaches that address the social determinants of health from safe\, affordable housing and education to jobs and violent crime in order to decrease the health disparities that exist. \nDr. Karin Wurapa\, is a passionate advocate for wellness. Dr. Wurapa is a Family\, Lifestyle\, and Preventive Medicine Physician who also specializes in Public Health Policy. She recently completed a special assignment as a consultant to the Medical Director and COVID Response Team at the Ohio Department of Health. \nOur moderator for the event is Ms. Tracy Maxwell Heard. DESCRIPTION:June 19 is World Sickle Cell Day and your blood donations play a critical role in helping people with sickle cell disease\, the most common genetic blood disease in the U.S. Sickle cell disease primarily affects people who are African American or of African descent.  A single patient with the disease my need up to 100 units of blood each year to treat complications. \n  \nIt’s essential that patients with sickle cell disease receive a compatible blood match from someone of the same race or similar ethnicity.  You can give someone living with sickle cell disease the strength to continue their fight. \n  \nThe American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases\, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. Dr. Ted McDaniel and Dr. Mark Lomax III will discuss Black music as a continuum and reflect on spirituals and blues as they relate to the foundation of global music. In addition they will talk about music as a symbol of resistance during the late 1800s and beyond. Dr. Lomax will share selections from his collection\, 400: An Afrikan Epic that directly relate to Juneteenth. \nCo-hosted by National Afro–American Museum & Cultural Center.\nLearn more about the history and significance of Juneteeth in a blog post written by Jerolyn Barbee and Derek Pridemore of the National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center. See that post here. \nSpeakers:\nDr. Ted McDaniel\, Professor of African American Music at The Ohio State University since 1981 is a specialist in jazz history\, jazz performance and African American Music; he retired in 2015.  He held faculty appointments in the School of Music and the Department of African American Studies where he served as Department Chair for eight years. His scholarly and creative writings were on aspects of jazz and black music\, and he was invited to lecture extensively throughout the United States and to present in Africa\, Europe and China. \nDr. Mark Lomax\, II holds a Doctor of Music Arts degree in composition from The Ohio State University.  He is a critically-acclaimed composer\, recording artist\, drummer\, activist and educator. He has toured extensively with jazz greats such as Clark Terry\, Delfeayo and Ellis Marsallis Dr. Lomax lectures on the socio-political and spiritual aspects of African American art\, music\, race and using the arts to build community. In 2019 he released 400:An Afrikan Epic. It consists of a 12 album cycle that tells the story of the Afrikan Diaspora.  This project was completed during a residency at The Wexner Center for the Arts. 400 has been presented across the country at various colleges\, universities\, art and community organizations. Learn more about the project and go behind the scenes with Dr. Lomax.
