DESCRIPTION:Black Arts Movement summer camp is a 6-week\, all-virtual program. \nThis summer’s theme is 5 Elements of Hip-Hop. \nWith the incorporation of the elements of Hip Hop; MCing (oral)\, Turntablism or DJing (aural)\, B-boying (physical)\, Graffiti art (visual) and Knowledge of self\, youth participants\, also known as King’s Kids\, ages 5-13\, will be exposed to the artist\, works and mediums of this era and explore the impacts of Hip Hop to this day. In addition to these various art forms\, youth will also engage in yoga\, dance\, visual art and so much more. \nProgramming Dates: June 15th- July 24th\, Monday- Friday \nRegistration fee: $25 for each child. Each registered child will receive a tablet for online programming. We can also provide assistance with WIFI if needed. \nScholarships: We have limited scholarships available that are household income-based\, and benefits based. SUMMARY:The Amos Lynch Series Featuring Bobby Floyd & Paisha Thomas
DESCRIPTION:The Amos Lynch Series is simply an opportunity for the community to remain vigilant to the cause of racial discrimination\, police brutality and murder\, and human rights for people of color. \nThe Set: The Amos Lynch Plaza. This is an outdoor event and subject to weather. However\, the goal is to perform 40 minutes of inspirational songs reminiscent of the 1960s protest movement. It is up to you what songs and the delivery is the artist’s preference. \nThe Performers: Bobby Floyd’s mother first discovered his amazing talent of playing the piano at the age of 2\, where he walked over to the old upright in their Marion home and began picking out melodies. Not much later\, his parents discovered he had perfect pitch\, and at five\, he was taking piano lessons. He has toured and performed extensively with Ray Charles\, Rusty Bryant\, Chris Howes\, Bryon Stripling and his own trio. His current touring schedule includes performances as featured soloist with orchestras throughout the USA and Canada. Floyd is also a frequent soloist with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra where his soulful sound has backed artists such as Chuck Mangione\, Branford Marsalis\, Mavis Stales\, Wycliffe Gordon and countless others. \nPaisha Thomas’ primary medium for engaging others through art is singing and songwriting. She creates music about love\, politics\, self-discovery\, and the condition of the world. In order to reach as many people as possible with music\, she performs in local venues with the band and sometimes as a solo artist. One of her most proud performances was in the Backstage at the Lincoln Theater Concert Series. Her vision as a performing artist is to continue making music that allows people to experience all of their emotions\, and also moves them to be their highest selves. In 2016\, she launched a concert series called Cover Me 2016 which provides a platform for local artists and raises funds to help cover costs of music education for students in underserved populations.

DANIEL\nKENNETH EADDY\nMusical Theater\, Theater/Performance\, R+B\, Singer-Songwriter\, Soul\, Ethnic\, Dance \nKenneth Daniel Eaddy\, known by his artist moniker K. Daniel\, is indeed a tour de force: singer-songwriter\, dancer and musical theatre actor. Originally from Cleveland\, Ohio\, he began to harness his craft upon moving to Columbus. \nK. Daniel’s connection to The Lincoln Theatre is where the magic truly began. He graduated from an artist development intensive in 2015. The following year\, he joined Thiossane (pronounced cha-sahn) West African Dance Institute\, and has recently come back from a two-week long pilgrimage in Senegal and The Gambia\, West Africa. In 2018\, K. Daniel was cast in a reprisal of the Broadway play Eubie!\, presented by CATCO\, during the centennial celebration of the Harlem Renaissance\, which earned him a 2019 Theatre Roundtable nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. \nThis past September\, K. Daniel showcased his love of arts into an emotionally charged monologue describing his life’s journey to a sold-out crowd on stage for the Backstage at The Lincoln Theatre series called Chrysalis Epoch. In February\, K. Daniel was a featured vocalist bringing the house down at the Lincoln Theatre for Say A Little Prayer: An Aretha Franklin Celebration\, a collaboration between Counterfeit Madison and The Wexner Center for the Arts. \nK. Classes meet once a week. At the end of each six-week session\, parents are invited to watch their child participate in class. (To protect the privacy of the other dancers\, we ask that parents do not video record the computer screen.) Class size is limited to 15 students. Registration will be based on a lottery system. Everyone who registers by the due date (the Tuesday before the session begins) will be entered into a lottery. Students whose names are drawn will be invited to participate in the session. Students whose names are not drawn but who show interest in future sessions will be automatically entered into those lotteries. \nFrequently Asked Questions \nWho can participate in Soar on Saturdays?\nChildren ages 8-12 who are not already enrolled at BalletMet. No previous dance training is necessary. \nWhere and when is Soar on Saturdays?\nDue to COVID19\, we are unable to host in-person sessions. All classes will take place through Zoom. SUMMARY:One Voice\, One Message: Black Lives Matter
DESCRIPTION:On May 25th\, 2020\, George Floyd\, a 46-year old black male was killed in Minneapolis\, Minnesota by a police officer who held his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds until he was no longer breathing. \nA video recording of this event went viral. And the world reacted. An all too familiar movement resurfaced and the shock\, pain\, and anger reverberated not just through the U.S. but the world. People took to the streets to protest\, to be heard\, to enact change. \nThis photography exhibition by Joshua Edmonds shares just a fragment of that reaction that took place in Columbus\, Ohio the following days after George Floyd’s death. \nThrough marching\, through art\, through protest\, community members came together to let their voices be heard as one. To echo the same message being shared around the world: BLACK LIVES MATTER. \nThe exhibition and related programming are part of an ongoing collaboration between Ohio State’s Frank W. Hale\, Jr. Black Cultural Center\, Office of Diversity and Inclusion\, and Urban Arts Space. It is presented in conjunction with The HeART of Protest series convened by The King Arts Complex. More than twenty arts and cultural organizations in Columbus have teamed up for The HeART of Protest\, which will include 46 non-sequential days of artistic protest determined by each organization to honor the 46 years of Mr. George Floyd’s life. The second is the unveiling of the HUGE\, beautiful mural on the KAC building. We are also showcasing our support for the #ArtUnitesCbus initiative to employ Columbus based visual artists to paint murals on the plywood covering Columbus business’s windows! A live DJ will be on-site to set the vibes and celebrate… join us! \n\n\nMore information on the three unveilings: \n\nHeART of Protest Mural\n\nPowerful images and synergistic energy between the three artists Marcus Billingsley and AdaObinnia Ijomah and Lance Johnson are reflective in their work. The mural is located on the south exterior walls of the King Arts Complex. \n  \nCoGO Bike Share – King Arts Complex Location \nZipping along the streets of Columbus has never been easier! CoGo Bike Share began from an initiative by Mayor Michael B. Coleman. After conducting a feasibility study in 2011\, the system was launched on July 30\, 2013 with only 30 stations and 300 bikes. Now the system boasts 80+ stations and 600+ bikes to help you get from point A to point B whenever you need them — 24 hours a day\, 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nSimply check out a bike at any automated bike station\, and then ride it around from station to station while checking out all Columbus has to offer. When you’ve reached your destination\, just dock your bike at the nearest station to complete your session\, and you’ll be on your way. \nThe station network provides twice as many docking points as bicycles\, assuring that an available dock to return your bicycle is always nearby. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to make a film? Once you learn how\, then you’ll have the creative control to make one! The Young Filmmakers Project is a hands-on course where students learn the nuts and bolts of film production at one of Columbus’s iconic arts institutions. In the process\, our young filmmakers will write\, direct and produce a short film.\n\nAll teens 13-18 years old who are interested in making movies are welcome — NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Learn professional script writing\, directing\, filming\, and editing! Collaborate with fellow aspiring filmmakers to write a screenplay\, direct actors\, film\, light and record audio on your very own film. The King Arts Complex has partnered with local Independent Filmmaker\, Siriah Miller\, to produce a professional short film. Participants of the Young Filmmakers Project will have a budget and access to professional film equipment. By the end of the program\, every aspiring artist will be have the official title of Filmmaker and a project of their very own to add to their reel.

DESCRIPTION:As a proud participant in The King Arts Complex’s artistic and cultural event The HeART of Protest\, Momentum presents an encore viewing of its show The Harlem Renaissance: Teach Them to Dream. \n\nIn May of 2019\, more than 1000 central Ohio children from 14 elementary schools danced this historic era back to life at the Davidson Theatre. Through stories shared between a grandfather and his granddaughter\, we learn about African-American icons\, including the visual artists\, writers\, musicians\, dancers\, and activists who sparked this rich period in American history. Kendi’s #1 New York Times bestselling and groundbreaking book\, How to Be an Antiracist\, led by King Arts Complex Performing Arts Director Jevon Collins. Time said Kendi’s book “punctures the myths of a post-racial America\, examining what racism really is—and what we should do about it.” \nKing Arts Complex is the Community Partner for this program. \nRegistration is on Eventbrite\, where attendees will receive login information and full instructions. A general admission ticket to access the event is $5. A ticket that includes a copy of How to Be an Antiracist waives the fee and is $29. Registration closes at 4:00 pm on the day of the program. \nAntiracism is a transformative concept that reorients and reenergizes the conversation about racism—and\, even more fundamentally\, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. At its core\, racism is a powerful system that creates false hierarchies of human value; its warped logic extends beyond race\, from the way we regard people of different ethnicities or skin colors to the way we treat people of different sexes\, gender identities\, and body types. Racism intersects with class and culture and geography and even changes the way we see and value ourselves. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the National Performance Network/Visual Artist Network\, on the Board of Governors and Vice President for Ohio State’s Black Alumni Society; and is a member of OSU’s College of Arts & Sciences Town & Gown Committee. Jevon is a founding member of the Next Gen National Arts Network and the Columbus Artists Network. \nFrom Juneteenth until November 3\, Gramercy Books is partnering with King Arts Complex in support of The HeART of Protest\, an initiative led by KAC\, a multidisciplinary artistic organization dedicated to social justice. The effort is designed to bring together over twenty Columbus arts and cultural organizations for 46 days of artistic protest to honor the 46 years of George Floyd’s life.
