Celebrating Curtis J. Moody, Sr. and Lewis R. Smoot, Sr.

The 13th Annual Legends and Legacies Award Ceremony and Reception

Dear Friends,

The leadership of The King Arts Complex is proud to honor Curtis J. Moody, Sr. CEO, Partner-in-Charge of Design, Moody Nolan, and Lewis R. Smoot, Sr. Chairman and CEO, Smoot Construction at its 13th annual Legends & Legacies Award Ceremony and Reception.

The event will take place on Thursday, October 17th at 7 P.M. in the historic Pythian Theater at The King Arts Complex. Jerry Revish will serve as the MC for the evening and a special guest will moderate a “fireside chat” with the honorees. A VIP reception will immediately follow in the Nicholson Auditorium.

Driven by a passion to break into a field with little minority representation, Curtis J. Moody, Sr. took a considerable risk and opened the doors of Moody and Associates in 1982 in the midst of a depressed economy. Shortly thereafter, Curtis joined forces with the engineering firm Howard E. Nolan & Associates, and Moody Nolan was born. Today, Moody Nolan has over 200 employees and 12 offices across the nation. As the largest African-American owned architecture firm in the nation, it consistently garners national attention by promoting “diversity by design.”

Lewis R. Smoot, Sr. learned the value of hard work at the tender age of 13, when his father, Sherman R. Smoot, encouraged him to go to work. Sherman owned the Smoot Company which he moved to Ohio in 1956. Lewis went to work for the company and over time, built a family business with a foundation of excellence and high standards. Lewis took over the helm of the family business in 1972. The company was renamed Smoot Construction, expanding its services beyond bricklaying to general contracting and construction management. Now entering the third generation of family leadership, Smoot Construction has offices in Indianapolis and Washington D.C. and is headquartered in Columbus.

Curt and Lewis have collaborated on a number of projects: residential, commercial, government, institutional, K-12 and college facilities. Two of the highlights include The Ohio State Union and the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C.

It is a special privilege to honor these distinguished men who have made remarkable contributions to business and civic life, in Columbus and beyond, as they also served as the original architect and builder of The King Arts Complex.

Enclosed, please find sponsorship and ticket purchase opportunities. We encourage you to give as generously as possible and join us the evening of October 17th as we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of Curtis J. Moody, Sr. and Lewis R. Smoot, Sr.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
